He was on Friday's show. It was great to see him, as always, but I have to admit, I think he does much better when he's using prewritten material. He doesn't do nearly as well with spontaneous banter. I felt the same way when I saw him on an old episode of the British version of Whose Line Is It Anyway. He's just not a good fit for improv; it's not his thing.
